Beginners Guides to Shotokan Karate

The Beginners Guide to Shotokan Karate by John van Weenen

This, the best selling book on Shotokan Karate in Europe, was published to fulfil the need for an elementary instruction manual written by a westerner for westerners, covering the three main basic concepts of karate training and a wealth of information on this fascinating Martial Art. It takes the student on the journey from beginner to black belt. It is an extremely versatile book and intended as a manual to assist club training and enable the beginner to follow the basic fundamentals that he has been taught by his own instructor. The Shotokan Karate handbook - Beginner to Black Belt by Gursharan Sahota

There have been numerous books written on the subject of Karate, including many that claim to show an easy, step-by-step, way of becoming a black belt by the third chapter. In a martial art such as Karate, it is extremely rare to find a book that can help the student with the physical aspect of Karate to any great degree. However, every now and then a publication appears on the bookstands that can do just that. One such book is this one. The following pages contain a wealth of information on the Kihon, Kata, and Kumite aspects of Traditional Shotokan. Written in an easy to follow manner, and supplemented by an extremely comprehensive set of photographs, this handbook is easily one of the more superior publications available.

Shotokan Karate - In Search of Excellence by Ashley Croft

Shotokan Karate is one of the most widely practised styles of karate in the world. For most of its history it has been taught clandestinely, with past masters only entrusting their secrets to a select few pupils. This approach has changed dramatically over the last 75 years, with karate being exported throughout the world. Topics include: fundamental principles and philosophy; main striking, blocking and kicking techniques; detailed instructions of moves with descriptions of the most common mistakes; flexibility training and the physiology of stretching, and finally provides an insight into the mysterious art of Kyusho Jutsu.

This book focuses exclusively on basics and goes into great detail about how each technique should be executed. It breaks down the moves with detailed instruction and describes the most common mistakes.

The Karate-do Manual - The Essence and Practice of Authentic Karate by P M V Morris

In this Vince Morris' first book, ‘The Karate-Do Manual’ published in 1979, we first see the use of the phrase "Kyusho-Jutsu" (Vital Point techniques) which signified a shift of focus away from the relatively ‘new’ sports oriented style of karate exemplified by Shotokan to a deeper study of the original concepts and practical effectiveness of traditional karate. This was long before such concepts became public knowledge through the work of others like George Dillman.
