 | Bo - Japanese Long Staff by Tadashi Yamashita Tadashi Yamashita was born in Japan in 1942. However, he considers himself an Okinawan. His father died when Yamashita was three and his mother, moved her family to Okinawa in 1950. He lived in Okinawa until 1964, when he came to the United States. When he came to the United States, he owned and operated a karate school for five years. In 1968, Tadashi went back to Japan and became the youngest seventh-degree black belt in the country's history. Among those judging his performance were his instructor, Sensei Sugura Nakazato, a ninth-degree black belt, and grandmaster Chosin Chibana, a tenth-degree black belt. Yamashita, who has more than 27 years of experience in the martial arts, began his study at the age of 11. Yamashita was 16 when he received his black belt. In 1960 he captured the all-Okinawan Shorin-Ryu Free Sparring Grand Champion title. Considered the foremost karate and weapons expert in the United States, Yamashita is the head instructor of the American Karate Association, as well as the head instructor of shorin-ryu karate in the United States. | |
