In 1968, Tadashi went back to Japan and became the young est seventh-degree black belt in the country's history. Among those judging his performance were his instructor, Sensei Sugura Nakazato, a ninth-degree black belt, and grandmaster Chosin Chibana, a tenth-degree black belt.

Yamashita, who has more than 27 years of experience in the martial arts, began his study at the age of 11. Yamashita was 16 when he received his black belt. In 1960 he captured the all-Okinawan Shorin-Ryu Free Sparring Grand Champion title. Bo - Karate Weapon of Self-Defence by Fumio Demura

Demura Sensei presents a well-organized primer in the use of the rokushaku bo (six-foot Okinawan quarter-staff). The book is organized into Introduction & History, Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced techniques, and a final section devoted to a bo kata. All basic stances, blocks and counters used with the bo are covered in the first sections. Many of these are similar or identical to standard open-hand karate techniques. Descriptions of subtle differences are well-explained. Combinations and working with a partner are covered in the latter sections of the book. Overall, the photo sequences of this acknowledged bo master demonstrating his art are very good, with the exception of the final bo kata pictures, which are very dark. This is an excellent reference.

Karate "Bo" Take-aways by Guy Trimble III

This book describes in detail the techniques of "bo" or staff disarms found in some karate Kata and it also describes "grappling in Armour techniques (Yoroi Kumi-uchi)" found in some karate Kata. Trimble examines the practical application of Jutte, Empi, Hangetsu, Gankaku-den and Kanku-sho. This book describes the techniques and shows how old Kata had real function in combat 500 or 1000 years ago and not the punching and kicking interpretations that are used at this time in history. The book includes a bo kata from Shigeru Egami.

The author Guy Trimble III has trained in Shotokan karate for close to 30 years. He has done extensive practice and research into many Kata including both Japanese and Chinese Kata and staff or "Bo" Kata. Guy's research into Kata has a historical weapons orientation including knifes, swords, pole-arms and staff weapons. It is Mr. Trimble's view that old Kata should show realistic combat techniques.
